Yet again I had to endure the utmost humiliation of being sandwiched into a backpack and paraded through the streets of Barcelona. Only this time I was forced to witness the history of human sexuality at Museu de l’Erotica. A tiny, relatively unassuming entrance off La Rambla…up the stairs, a ticket paid and a glass of champagne later, the room opens up into everything your school textbooks never taught you.
Jo likes to joke about getting her picture taken with a giant penis, and, frankly, she expected nothing but dildos displayed in glass cases at this place, with very little of anything else. However, the museum did not disappoint! It had an endless variety of exhibits that ranged as far back as cave paintings to present day 50 Shades of Grey, although the latter would be more appropriately displayed in a museum of comedy.
One of the information plaques posed the question: Was Rasputin driven mad because he was burdened with a circus-sized phallus? The world may never know…but that sure would explain a lot.
There was also a perfume display, antique corsets and vibrators (ya’ know, back when women were “hysterical”).
You really do get a glass of champagne upon entry, and feel free to mosey on out to their outdoor garden to enjoy it. You can’t beat the price (9 euros), and if you find yourself rambling down La Rambla, go on in and check it out!
